Frequently Asked Questions
What is the dirt dump on RV steps?
The Dirt Dump occurs when Sturdy but Dirty fold down camper steps are folded up and into your camper’s doorway. This action dumps accumulated dirt, sand, and debris that has collected on top of the steps during use, directly onto your camper’s floor. This occurs because the steps become inverted when you fold them up for travel. Gravity does the rest as the dirt falls from the steps and makes a mess on your camper’s floor. At ByGeorgeWheelSystems, we specifically engineered and designed the StepSentry to divert dirt away from your RV entry and in so doing, successfully eliminated this common problem known as the Dirt Dump.
How does the StepSentry prevent dirt from entering my RV?
StepSentry installs under the bottom step and uses a corrugated plastic deflector to redirect dirt, gravel, and debris away from the RV entry. Unlike carpet or foam covers that only brush dirt off your feet onto the steps, StepSentry diverts dirt completely so it never accumulates. This means dirt and debris does not dump inside your RV when you fold your steps up for travel. No mess, no stress!
Does StepSentry work with MORryde and Lippert steps?
Yes, the StepSentry is compatible with both MORryde and Lippert fold-down steps, the most common brands installed on RV’s built since 2016. The StepSentry system works only with the piano hinge mounted, fold down designs with adjustable legs. The StepSentry system is not designed for the old style of under-the-frame mounted pull out steps. Contact ByGeorgeWheelSystems for a custom fit if your steps don't match the standard narrow or wide dimensions.
How do I install the StepSentry on my camper?
The StepSentry is installed easily in less than 1 minute under the bottom step. There are no tools needed and no drilling or modification of your steps is required to install. The system is designed for straightforward attachment to existing RV steps and stores in place during travel. Installation is simple enough for RV owners of all experience levels, and the deflector can be deployed or retracted quickly at each campsite.
What's the difference between StepSentry and carpet step covers?
Carpet or foam covers attach to the top of steps and brush dirt off your feet. But all that dirt collects on the steps only to get dumped inside your camper once they are folded up. The StepSentry system entirely blocks and diverts dirt away from your RV’s entry before it can dump inside and onto the floor. The StepSentry is the only product specifically engineered to eliminate the Dirt Dump, offering 100% protection compared to about 30% from competitors.
Can I use StepSentry on uneven campsites?
Yes, the BareFoot -Quick Level system from StepSentry products quickly and easily levels RV steps safely and securely on uneven ground. Once installed on the factory legs, the BareFoot allows instant height adjustment. This reduces set up time all while providing a perfect solution to awkward step angles, wobble, and instability. This improves safety and comfort at campsites with variable terrain, a common condition at campgrounds across North America. You will never have to search for something to wedge under the low side of the steps again!
What size StepSentry do I need for my RV?
MORryde and Lippert are the most common manufacturers of fold down steps. Each brand is visibly labeled so it is easy to identify which model is installed on your RV. Once you’ve done that, measure only the width of your steps (inside the risers) to determine if you have a narrow (19 or 19.5 inches) or wide (22 or 22.5 inches) fold down step. If your steps don't match these common dimensions, contact ByGeorgeWheelSystems and they will customize a StepSentry system for your unique needs.
Does the retractable step cover protect steps during travel?
IT DOESN’T REALLY DO ANYTHING DURING TRAVEL OTHER THAN STAY IN PLACE UNTIL THE NEXT TIME YOU USE THE CAMPER.
Why was StepSentry invented?
The StepSentry was created after the founder's wife grew tired of the Dirt Dump which happened every time they went camping in their RV. She said to him, “Find me something that will stop the dirt and buy it!” When he told her he couldn’t find a product that does that, she said “You invent stuff…, make me something.” So, he did! The product was developed to solve this real camper problem by diverting dirt away from the entry thus eliminating a mess. At ByGeorgeWheelSystems, the goal is to make camping easier so you can Make Memories, Not a Mess!
Can I buy StepSentry components separately or as a package?
You can purchase the Dirt Deflector, The (original) StepSentry, or the BareFoot-Quick Level individually as standalone upgrades, or buy the Full RV Step System Package that includes all components. The modular design allows customization based on your travel style and needs. Buying the complete package is a cost-effective option for frequent travelers who want maximum cleanliness, protection, and step stability.
What types of RVs work with StepSentry products?
The StepSentry line of products are designed for campers, travel trailers, fifth wheels, and motorhomes with factory fold-down steps. The system components enhance existing steps rather than replacing them, making them compatible with multiple RV step configurations. At ByGeorgeWheelSystems, we engineer products that are ideal for weekend campers, seasonal travelers, and full-time RV owners across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
How does StepSentry reduce RV cleaning time?
By diverting dirt, gravel, sand, and debris away from the RV entry before it can be dumped inside your camper. This eliminates the mess caused by the Dirt Dump and therefore frees up more time for you to make memories. The system is especially helpful for campers traveling through muddy campsites, gravel pads, or outdoor-heavy environments.
